Day 2: A Smile

We saw a little more progress on day 2. She wasn’t very responsive in the morning except grimacing in response to discomfort but she became more active in the afternoon. She opened her eyes on command and looked at Mike. They untied her arms and she started trying to pull on her tubes. I think I would too! Then Mike told her Amber got her ears pierced and she smiled! Little progress like a smile feels really big right now.

She has also started doing breathing trials, breathing on her own every three hours. The ventilator is still in place but it is letting her do the work periodically and her vitals are staying stable. They are building her up so they can remove the vent quickly when she is ready. This is great news but there isn’t a rush to push her. She can’t have the ventilator removed until she is awake, following commands consistently and can cough voluntarily.

She has started running a low grade fever so they are running blood cultures and treating with tylenol. Her blood pressure also spiked in the evening but it came back down with some pain medication.

We got a little feedback to hold on tight for days 3-5. This is when the brain swells the most and we may see some setbacks for a few days. Mike’s friend, and Stake President, told him to “expect miracles” so that’s what Mike has decided to do.

We are praying for miracles.
